Why You May Need a Tummy Tuck

No matter how many sit-ups you do, no matter how carefully you watch your diet, your belly just never seems to get as flat as you'd like. The reasons for this could be beyond your control.

Weak tissue, pregnancy, weight changes and genetics can all cause your stomach to protrude. If your skin has been stretched to a certain point, diet and exercise may not be able to help you achieve the look you want. Opting for a tummy tuck in Baltimore can help you reach your goal of a smooth, taut abdomen.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, also known as an "abdominoplasty," is one of the most popular procedures. Members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons perform nearly 100,000 tummy tucks annually. It is a common component of a "mommy makeover" and is also popular among men and women who have lost massive amounts of weight.

People who choose a tummy tuck in Baltimore, MD, benefit from a procedure that removes excess fat and hanging skin and tightens their abdominals. So if you are experiencing the trifecta aging process of loose skin, stubborn fat and sagging abdominals, a tummy tuck is the only procedure that can address all those problems at once.

Other plastic surgeries can be combined with tummy tuck procedures such as a breast augmentation, Brazilian Butt Lift or liposuction. If you are looking for a full-body mommy makeover or abdominoplasty in Baltimore, discuss your options with Dr. Basner during your consultation.

The Benefits of Working With Us

Our Baltimore tummy tuck office will work closely with you to ensure your desired results. An abdominoplasty provides numerous physical benefits, such as:

  • Stronger, tighter abdominal muscles
  • A slimmer, flatter, more attractive waistline
  • Improved overall proportions
  • Reduced stretch marks

But a tummy tuck can also deliver essential emotional benefits, like:

  • Increased enjoyment of personal relationships
  • Improved comfort in your own skin
  • Motivation to keep up with healthy eating habits and exercise
  • Renewed confidence in swimsuits and fitted clothing
  • Participation in physical activities you previously avoided

A consultation with our Baltimore abdominoplasty practice can put you on the path to enjoying all these benefits and much more.

Is a Tummy Tuck Permanent?

A tummy tuck is a permanent procedure that removes excess skin tissue from your body. After a tummy tuck, your core will be more solid and stable. The excess skin and fat removed will not return unless you experience pregnancy or weight changes. You can guarantee the outcomes of your procedure will be long-lasting by maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Mini Tummy Tuck vs. Full Tummy Tuck

If you have a smaller amount of fat below the belly button and minimal loose skin, a mini tummy tuck may be appropriate. This procedure is less intensive, with a smaller incision and scar, but it cannot produce the same results as a full tummy tuck. Most patients will benefit more from a full tummy tuck, but you may be a mini tummy tuck candidate if you:

  • Have minimal skin sagging
  • Have a smaller amount of fat located mainly below the belly button
  • Are not looking for complete rejuvenation of the entire body

Understand that while the scar will be shorter, the results will be less comprehensive. At our tummy tuck office in Baltimore, Dr. Basner will listen to your concerns and let you know if you will benefit from a mini tummy tuck or if a full abdominoplasty would be more appropriate.

Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck

Many patients at our Baltimore tummy tuck office wonder what the difference is between liposuction and a tummy tuck and which procedure is better for them. A tummy tuck is much more extensive than liposuction and can address more issues. Liposuction will not affect loose muscles or excess skin; however, it may be a good choice if your primary concern is small areas of stubborn fat.

The only way to tell for sure which procedure would be better for you is by having an in-person consultation at our tummy tuck practice in Baltimore, but a good rule of thumb is the following:

Get liposuction if you have:

  • Fat in the stomach, back, thighs, love handles or other areas
  • Minimal or no sagging skin
  • Abdominal muscles in good shape

Get a tummy tuck if you have:

  • Lots of loose, sagging skin
  • Larger amounts of excess fat in the abdominal area
  • Weakened or separated abdominal muscles

Who Is a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Post-pregnancy women and people who have lost significant amounts of weight are often great candidates for a tummy tuck in Baltimore. However, there are other groups who can benefit. • Are in good general health
  • Are a non-smoker or able to quit for at least a month both before and after surgery
  • Understand the potential risks
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Have chronic medical conditions such as diabetes well under control

Recovery From a Tummy Tuck

You may have heard that recuperating from a tummy tuck in Baltimore is extremely unpleasant, but it's different for each patient. Dr. Basner takes care to ensure that your rehabilitation is as comfortable as possible and uses innovative post-operative pain management alternatives such as a pain medication called EXPAREL. This is injected directly into the surgical area during your operation and relieves and numbs the pain for approximately 72 hours afterward.

Using this numbing agent saves you from having to take narcotic pain medications every few hours after your surgery, and most patients find their healing process relatively easy.

After your tummy tuck, you should expect to take at least a week off work to rest and recover. If your job requires manual labor, you may need to take longer. You must also refrain from exercise and strenuous activity for four to eight weeks.

While each patient heals differently, a general guideline for recovery after a tummy tuck is something like this:

  • The day of surgery: Have a family member or friend drive you home, and make sure you have someone to help you with tasks like dressing, sitting up and walking to the bathroom. Dr. Bassner may also recommend his patients wear a compression garment. This compression garment will help patients receive the best results and speed up healing.
  • The day after surgery: Start walking around as much as you can, but refrain from anything more strenuous. Help with housework and childcare will be needed. Drink plenty of fluids, eat very light meals and wear loose-fitting clothes and undergarments.
  • One week after surgery: If you have a desk job, return to employment.
  • Two weeks after surgery: Resume light exercise, but avoid anything that may strain the abdominal muscles. Swelling and bruising should be starting to dissipate.
  • Four weeks after surgery: Resume moderate exercise, but continue to avoid putting strain on your stomach. You may still have some swelling, so don't worry if your abdomen doesn't look like what you imagined yet.

While we typically recommend following these general guidelines, Dr. Basner will provide you with individualized and detailed post-operative instructions.

Dr. Basner will be available for you throughout your recovery, so if you have any concerns or think that you're not healing like you should, don't hesitate to contact our office. You will have follow-up appointments in the days, weeks and months after your surgery so that Dr. Basner can check to ensure everything is healing and progressing well.

The Cost of a Tummy Tuck

The cost will vary greatly for a tummy tuck in Baltimore, depending on the expertise of your surgeon, whether you are having multiple procedures done, the extent of your surgery and more. Our staff will determine the final cost of your tummy tuck surgery after your initial consultation with Dr. Basner. Your estimate will cover essentials like:

  • Operating room time and supplies
  • Pre- and post-procedure visits
  • Surgeon's fee
  • Anesthesia fees
  • Necessary medical support materials

When researching and deciding on your plastic surgeon, we know the cost will be a factor. However, please keep in mind that cheaper is not always better. The experience of your plastic surgeon plays a massive role in how good your results will be, as well as how low your risk will be. Choosing a plastic surgeon who is not board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and who does not perform tummy tucks regularly can lead to inconsistent results, increased complications and, in rare instances, death.

If the cost of a tummy tuck concerns you, rest assured. Dr. Basner offers financing options through CareCredit, and there are other resources you can seek out, as well. Please ask our patient coordinator about this during your initial meeting. We are happy to work with you to help you afford the body you've been dreaming of.
