Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Serving Baltimore, Columbia, Owings Mills, Towson, Nearby Maryland & Lower Pennsylvania

Ear surgery – also called otoplasty – may be a good answer for you if you are constantly trying to conceal your ears behind your hair because you are embarrassed about them. It is also a good option if you are too self-conscious about your ears to wear certain hats that expose them. It can be a good option for a child, if your child is teased by other children because of his or her ears.

Dr. Basner provides a facial surgery consultation so you can learn more about this procedure and decide if it's right for you. To arrange your appointment, please call The Plastic Surgery Center of Maryland at 410-616-3000.

What Is Otoplasty?

Ear surgery is a common procedure that improves the position of overly prominent ears. When your ears stick out at a wide angle from your head, it can make you feel awkward and self-conscious around other people. During the otoplasty procedure, Dr. Basner will make an incision behind your ear. The resulting scar is very well hidden. From this incision, Dr. Basner reshapes the ear to create a more balanced look.

Once Dr. Basner makes the incision, he will remove extra cartilage and tissue that is positioning the ear away from the head. The cartilage is then re-contoured and sutured into a more aesthetically pleasing position.

"A friend had told me about the Otoplasty procedure. I had never given it much thought because I thought that the procedure would be too expensive. I play soccer and I noticed when I wore my hair up people would stare at my ears. I also noticed people staring at my ears while having a conversation. But most of all, I felt like my ears didn't fit my body. It was aggravating! I went for my consultation and I couldn't believe how affordable the procedure really was. Since having the procedure I am a different person. I got my confidence back. Dr. Basner and his staff were great!" – P.R.

Ear Surgery Cost

There are many factors that can make the final cost of otoplasty higher or lower for you or your child. The only way to get an accurate estimate for your situation is to visit Dr. Basner for a one-on-one consultation. We'll make sure you know what to expect (including cost) if you decide to undergo the procedure.

Good Candidates for Ear Surgery

Anyone who is unhappy with the way their ears project from their head is a good candidate for otoplasty. Sometimes children are good candidates for the procedure. As a child, living with ears that look so different from their peers can be devastating. They may be relentlessly teased and feel isolated as a result. With this simple procedure, you can normalize the position of your child's ears so they can be more confident and enjoy better self-esteem.

By age four a child's ears should be fully developed. Children who receive otoplasty typically undergo the procedure between age 4 to 14. Adults of any age are also good candidates for ear surgery.
