Every time you look in the mirror, you think, "If only my nose weren't so big, or small, or wide, or long, or short." It could be the nose you were born with, or the result of an injury. Whatever the reason, you long for a more refined, balanced look.
With rhinoplasty, Baltimore, Maryland, plastic surgeon Dr. Adam Basner can help you achieve that look. A bump on the nose can be reduced or removed. Flared nostrils can be narrowed. Crooked and unbalanced noses can be straightened. The angle between your nose and upper mouth can be altered. The tip of your nose can be reshaped. The width can be narrowed. Dr. Basner can also perform surgery to correct nasal problems such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps simultaneously with your rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty is best performed after the growth of the bone is complete, usually in the mid-teens. The bone and cartilage of your nose will be resculpted, and the remaining skin will be redraped over your new, attractive nose.
Below are some frequently asked questions about rhinoplasty. These are designed only to provide you with general information regarding this procedure. We will provide you with extensive information during your complimentary consultation. Any further questions or concerns may also be addressed at that time.
Rhinoplasty performed for cosmetic purposes is not covered by insurance. However, if you are experiencing breathing problems or have a deviated septum that can be corrected with rhinoplasty, this procedure may be covered by your insurance policy. We will be happy to review coverage with your insurance provider during your initial consultation.
You will need to keep your head elevated for a day or two after the surgery. You may experience a feeling of stuffiness, discomfort, headache, and bleeding. Expect some swelling and bruising around your eyes, although this will fade and disappear within a week or two. Cold compresses can relieve some of the discomfort.
After surgery, a splint is applied to help maintain your new shape and to protect the nose. Nasal packing may be placed inside the nose for support. This will require you to breathe through your mouth for a few days until the packing is removed. The splint and sutures are usually removed within one week.
After about two weeks, most people will not be able to tell you've had surgery. Slight swelling may last for several months to a year, although this will most likely only be noticed by you and the doctor.
You'll generally be able to return to work or school within a week. You'll need to avoid strenuous activity for two to three weeks. Glasses will need to be propped on your cheeks or forehead for three to four weeks. You'll need to be careful not to jar or rub your nose and avoid prolonged exposure to sun for about two months.
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved, such as infection or bleeding. Small red spots from burst blood vessels may appear, and these are permanent. However, complications are rare.
Because incisions are made inside the nostrils or at the base of the nose, Dr. Basner can work from inside the nose, carefully reshaping and sculpting the bones and cartilage. Incisions made inside the nose are never seen; incisions at the nostrils heal to almost invisible scars.
Rhinoplasty is best performed on those who have reached or passed their mid-teens and wish to improve the shape of their nose. If you are physically and emotionally healthy, and realistic in your expectations, this procedure may be right for you. Find out more by scheduling your complimentary consultation now.
