Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that modifies the upper or lower eyelids. While it may seem to be a vanity, cosmetic procedure, such as with the lower eyelids as it removes the bags that time has left behind. Often times thought, it serves a medical purpose as with the upper eyelids. A Blepharoplasty on the upper eyelids remove excess skin that is drooping and affecting one's peripheral vision.

Depending upon your needs and overall health, Dr. Basner may perform a Blepharoplasty by itself with only a local anesthesia or he may suggest combining the procedure with a facelift which will require a general anesthesia. If he suggest that you have either the upper or lower eyelid procedure independently, they will take approximately an hour each and will be on an outpatient basis.

Dr. Basner begin an upper eyelid Blepharoplasty by making an incision along the upper crease, removing excess skin and some fat and then stitch the incision closed. For the lower eyelids Blepharoplasty, Dr. Basner makes an subciliary incision, which is under the eyelashes. Just as with the upper eyelid, excess skin and a little bit of fat are removed. Then the muscles are tightened and the skin is pulled taut and the incision is stitched.

Dr. Basner will prescribe pain medication, however, over-the-counter pain relievers work just as well for some. Every patient may vary, but on the average, stitches are usually removed within a week. Depending on the type of work the patient does, they can return within a week. Any strenuous jobs and activities you are usually recommended to wait 3 to 4 weeks. Again, every patient is different.

Some complications that you may experience is bleeding, blurred vision for a short time, persistent swelling and possible slow to heal. Some patients have experienced white and anyone with a thyroid condition could experience dry eyes. If you have have any of these arise, contact Dr. Basner immediately.

Before you undergo a Blepharoplasty, Dr. Basner will evaluate the cause of your puffy eyelids as well as your overall health. If an allergic reaction is the cause for your eyelid puffiness, a Blepharoplasty is not the solution. Be sure to disclose your complete medical history and medications. Non-smokers recover faster than those who smoke.
