From time to time you probably have noticed that some men have breasts that are as big as or even bigger than some women. There is no certain age or race this affects, it can be found in 50% of the men around the world. It can be uncomfortable for men, making them self-conscious of their looks, worry how they dress and most of all, taking their shirt off in front of other people like at swimming pools, the beach or even more so, in an intimate moment.
This condition is called Gynecomastia or in more common terms ‘man boobs’, which is caused by high levels of estrogen, a female hormone. This condition can be the results of overweight, puberty hormones, steroid abuse and even a reaction to some prescription drugs. In years past, men just lived with this condition as it was just an act of nature and meant to be.
A visit with your doctor is the first step to determine if there is anything causing that can be changed, such as prescription medicines. If you have or have had a steroid abuse problem, that should be addressed as well and steps to get rid of that abuse problem are needed. Or if you are overweight, your doctor will recommend weight loss and exercise.
Diet and exercise are the safest way but also the slowest way to reduce male boobs. This process can take up to 12 months and diligent, strict self control is needed. Watching your calories, keeping a regiment of exercise such as lifting weights and cardio exercises will not only help reduce your man boobs, but will be a benefit to your overall health as well. The big note here is that using diet and exercise, you have to make a commitment and keep up the daily routine. Diet and exercise has to become a way of life for you.
So once you have cleared with your doctor that there is steroid abuse issue or there is no prescription medication issue, the diet and exercise routine, although not the fastest solution, will be a healthy and safest fix. However, there are some men that want to rid their man boobs quicker. For those men, there is a Gynecomastia procedure that reduces male boobs.
A Gynecomastia procedure is a surgery in which a plastic surgeon will make an incision on the side of your chest and remove the unwanted breast tissue. In some cases it is necessary to make an incision across the chest wall and in some cases, it may be necessary for the surgeon to make a small incision under the nipple.
With surgery, you will see the results much quicker than with diet and exercise. Your desired results are visible within two to three months. Just like any surgery though, there are risks. In the second part of this blog, we will discuss the pros and cons of having a Gynecomastia procedure performed.
