A tummy tuck, also called abdominoplasty, is often associated with restoring a pre-pregnancy body, but in fact a tummy tuck can be a useful whether you've had a baby or not. Men as well as women can benefit from this procedure if they have loose abdominal muscles, excess skin, and excess fat in the stomach area.tummy-tuck-flat-stomach.jpg

Tummy tuck surgery is more extensive than liposuction, and involves suturing the abdominal muscles back together, removing excess loose skin, and removing larger amounts of fat than liposuction alone can accomplish.

If you are interested in a tummy tuck, please don't hesitate to contact Baltimore plastic surgeon Dr. Adam Basner at 410-616-3000 to schedule your consultation.

Do I Need A Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck can address a wide range of issues, and can be customized based on your individual needs. Dr. Basner offers mini tummy tucks for men and women who have excess skin and fat below the belly button but don't necessarily need abdominal muscle tightening. He also offers more extensive tummy tuck procedures if you need skin tightening and contouring in a larger area than just the abdomen.

The typical tummy tuck candidate has any of the following issues:

  • Loose, protruding abdominal muscles due to either pregnancy or an overly sedentary lifestyle
  • Excessive loose skin and/or fat from pregnancy, weight loss, or age

Pregnancy is the leading cause of needing a tummy tuck, as having a baby stretches the skin and muscles to the point where they may not be able to bounce back no matter how hard you exercise or how well you eat.

Age and a sedentary lifestyle may also cause changes to the body that may be prohibitively hard to reverse through a healthy lifestyle alone. Years of eating poorly and never exercising can cause loosened abdominal muscles, stretched skin, and stubborn fat that just won't disappear.

Massive weight loss can cause large amounts of loose skin that doesn't retract naturally. If this is your case, you may not need a full tummy tuck, but rather just excision of the excess skin. Dr. Basner will discuss what type of treatment you need during your consultation.

Can A Tummy Tuck Help Me Lose Weight?

A tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure, and will not cause you to lose any significant amount of weight on the scale. However, it can help you achieve a flatter abdominal area and help you to eliminate stubborn fat, which is often enough for men and women to get motivated to stick to a healthy diet and exercise plan to shed pounds as well as fat.

A tummy tuck will have the best results if you are already at or near a stable weight that you can maintain. If your BMI is over 30, Dr. Basner may recommend that you lose weight before undergoing a tummy tuck.
