Adam Basner Liposuction

Hi, I’m Dr. Adam Basner and I’m a board-certified plastic surgeon. In this video, I’m going to talk to you about liposuction. Liposuction is one of my most common procedures. Liposuction itself is basically very straight-forward. During liposuction, we take a cannula, which is basically a thin, metal tube which is essentially a metal straw and during the procedure we insert this under the skin and we move it back and forth to suction or remove the fat there. There are many different types of liposuction – tumescent, power assisted, phaser, laser, ultra sonic. Basically, all of them do the same thing. They remove the excess in the fatty layer. People have made claims that one technique is better than the other. We all read the same scientific literature. If one were truly better all of us would have adopted to it. The truth is is that the surgeon is important in liposuction more so than the instrument that they use and you can get excellent results with any standard liposuction technique. Not everyone is a good candidate for liposuction. To be a good candidate, besides having some fatty excess, you need to have good skin elasticity or good skin tone and what I mean by that is once the fat is removed the skin needs to be able to shrink back down in order to give a smooth, even result. I group people into three categories. Group one is someone who has smooth, even, elastic skin. They are the perfect candidates for liposuction and will have a great result. Group three is someone who has loose, inelastic skin and I explain to them that if they have liposuction the result will not be good as the skin will not shrink back down and they will have disappointing, uneven results and should not have this procedure. Group two is probably the largest category. These are patients who have generally good skin tone but slight unevenness and looseness in certain parts of their body. What they can expect from their surgical result is dramatic improvement in clothing. However, I explain to them that certain areas which are a little bit loose now will remain loose afterwards and my job and my goal is to explain to you in advance what your results will be like so that you can make a determination as to whether the surgery is right for you.
